Nurul Haque Nur Warns of ‘Fascist Attitudes’ Despite Regime Change

What's the story

Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur said on Friday that elements of fascism remain visible in Bangladesh, despite the fall of the regime his party opposed.

Speaking at a rally in Brahmanbaria’s Poura Muktamancha, Nur argued that while “fascism has fallen” and much of the danger has passed, the same behaviour can still be seen in political and social circles.

Gono Odhikar Parishad held a rally titled “From the 2018 Quota Reform Movement to the 2024 Mass Uprising.” A key speaker, former student union VP Nur, claimed the Awami League’s old habits of violence and extortion are returning, despite the recent political changes from last year’s mass uprising.

“One year after the mass uprising, we are now seeing the recurrence of that extortion and land-grabbing among many of us,” he told the audience.

He accused the interim government of failing to bring perpetrators to justice. “Though fascism has been banned, the bragging of its allies is still evident,” he said.

Nur singled out the Jatiya Party, calling it an ally of the Awami League during what he described as 16 years of fascism. He demanded that the party’s activities be banned immediately.

The Gono Odhikar leader emphasized that the movement was never about elevating individuals to parliament or ministerial posts. “Students and people did not sacrifice their lives to make someone an MP or minister,” he said.

Nur also called for state reforms before the next national election, arguing that only structural changes can prevent a repeat of past abuses.

At the end of the rally, he distributed cash assistance to families of those killed during the anti-Modi protests and the July Uprising.
