In a fiery Facebook post, National Citizen Party leader Nahid Islam argued that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has no claim to the title ‘Father of the Nation.’ While crediting his role in the 1971 war for independence, Islam condemned his subsequent leadership and the political system it spawned.
He argued that Mujib’s government made Bangladesh a “colonial state of India” and introduced a constitution that opened the way for political killings and one-party rule under BAKSAL.
Nahid accused the Awami League of building what he called “political idol worship” around Mujibur Rahman and the Liberation War. According to him, the party used this legacy to justify repression, corruption, and division among citizens.
“Behind the fascist politics of the Awami League, there had been worship of Mujib and the Liberation War,” he wrote. “This was nothing but the establishment of a modern feudal system under the guise of democracy.”
He further claimed that “Mujibism” represents enforced disappearances, human rights violations, communal tensions, and the loss of national sovereignty. “Our struggle is not against any individual, but against a fascist ideology,” Nahid said.
The NCP leader argued that Mujibur Rahman’s image had been politically weaponized for decades, while violence and corruption spread under its shadow. He urged people to defeat what he called “Mujibism” through political, ideological, and cultural resistance.
“Bangladesh is nobody’s property; it is a republic,” he wrote, calling for a democratic order where no party or leader dominates the people.
