UN Pledges Support for Bangladesh Election During Meeting with Chief Adviser Yunus

What's the story

The United Nations has expressed full support for Bangladesh’s upcoming general election, scheduled for February, during a meeting between UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

At the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday, Lewis described the vote as “crucial for the country’s democratic transition.” She pledged the UN’s assistance in ensuring a process that is transparent, free, fair, and peaceful.

The Chief Adviser’s office confirmed that the meeting focused heavily on election preparations. Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said the UN’s continued backing of the Election Commission was highlighted as part of broader cooperation with Bangladesh’s interim government.

Lewis also praised the strong relationship between the UN and the administration, saying the two sides have worked closely on development priorities and reforms. The discussion included how the UN could expand its role in supporting the government’s reform agenda.

Beyond electoral matters, the talks touched on upcoming global events. Both sides reviewed preparations for the United Nations General Assembly in New York and a Rohingya conference later this month.

The humanitarian situation for Rohingya refugees dominated part of the discussion. Funding for relief efforts has sharply declined, leaving education and other critical services in the camps under pressure. Yunus called for renewed international solidarity and more resources to close the gap.

Lewis said the UN remains committed to Bangladesh’s reform and transition process, while also acknowledging the urgency of the Rohingya crisis. She stressed the organization’s focus on helping the country pursue sustainable development and long-term prosperity.

The meeting marked another round of engagement between the interim government and international partners as Bangladesh prepares for both elections and broader policy shifts in the months ahead.
