Court Grants Five-Day Remand for Titon Gazi in Sohag Murder Case

What's the story

A Dhaka court on Saturday granted a five-day remand for Md Titon Gazi, one of the accused in the murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, in Old Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Giyas approved the remand after police submitted a plea seeking seven days of custody.

Police believe Gazi was directly involved in the deadly attack, according to their remand request. Investigators are convinced he knows who else was involved and can help them identify the other suspects, whether they have names for them or not.

They argue that questioning Gazi is crucial to piecing together how the murder happened. Police also need to find the weapons used and get the full story on how the crime was planned and carried out.

The court decision comes just a day after two other suspects, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin and Tarek Rahman Robin, were placed on remand. Mohin was granted five days, while Robin, a Chhatra Dal leader, received a two-day remand.

The case is being closely watched. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has indicated that it will be moved to a Speedy Trial Tribunal, citing the need for prompt justice in what has become a widely condemned murder.

On 9 July, Sohag was beaten to death in broad daylight near Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, also known as Mitford Hospital. Witnesses say he was attacked with large chunks of concrete after allegedly refusing to pay extortion money.

A well-known scrap dealer in the area, Sohag’s killing has stirred public anger and renewed talk of crime tied to politics. Police have yet to close the case.
