Tarek Rahman Robin, a leader of the BNP’s student wing, has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, during a court appearance in Dhaka. (Also read: Tarique Rahman Accuses Interim Government of Shielding Anarchists Amid Old Dhaka Killing)

Robin, who served as the senior joint convener of Ward 30 unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal under Chawkbazar police station, gave his statement before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias on Saturday. The confession came just one day after he was placed on a two-day remand in a case filed under the Arms Act.

Following the statement, the court ordered Robin to be sent to jail.

Separate Cases and Arrests

Authorities have filed two cases with Kotwali Police Station. One concerns the murder itself, and the other relates to firearms. Robin is named in the arms case, while another accused, Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, is being held on a five-day remand in the murder investigation.

Both suspects were arrested on July 11.

Details of the Incident

On July 9, Sohag was attacked near Mitford Hospital in broad daylight. He was killed on the spot, beaten with chunks of concrete. Bystanders said it happened because he wouldn’t pay extortion money.

Sohag, a long-time scrap metal trader in the Rajani Ghosh Lane area, lived in Purbo Namabari village under the Keraniganj Model Police Station jurisdiction.

The killing has sparked public outrage, raising questions about political influence and street-level crime in Old Dhaka. The confession now places direct accountability on individuals linked to established political groups, drawing further scrutiny to the role of party affiliates in recent unrest.
