In a major show of strength, Assam’s ruling BJP showcased its growing influence on Thursday by absorbing a diverse group of new faces.
The list included prominent lawyers and politicians from rival parties, but the real headline-grabber was Dristi Rajkhowa.
A former top commander for the banned ULFA-I militant group, the one-time explosives expert had surrendered in 2020 before making his formal entry into politics.
“I have always prioritized my land over my life,” he said after formally joining the BJP. “I made sacrifices earlier for my state, and I am prepared to do it again.”
He expressed concern over ongoing threats to Assam and said he viewed the BJP as a platform capable of addressing them.
“The BJP is working for the people. I believe this is the best forum to raise and resolve our problems,” he added.
Mix of Professional and Political Figures
The list of new inductees includes Manas Sarania, a lawyer with growing influence in regional legal circles, and Manoj Dhanowar, former state president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Assam.
Arjun Chettri, vice president of Assam Gorkha Sammelan and ex-president of the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union, also joined the party.
Other entrants include Nirmal Payeng, previously general secretary of the Raijor Dal’s youth wing, and Amal Patowary, former secretary of the Asom Gana Parishad’s central committee.
Party Reaction
State BJP president Dilip Saikia led the induction ceremony. National leadership representatives, including Assam in-charge Harish Dwivedi and organisational general secretary GR Ravindra Raju, were also present.
Speaking at the event, Saikia said the party was open to all individuals who wish to serve the nation.
On the surface, it’s about unity and indigenous rights. But many believe the BJP’s true focus is building political momentum before the polls.
They’re scooping up anyone they can get to build a base that’s impossible to beat. Whether these new people will actually have a say or are just being used for their names is what everyone’s waiting to see.
