Former President Donald Trump is expected to visit a newly constructed immigration detention center in Florida’s Everglades, a site that has drawn both political attention and criticism.
Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz” by some state leaders, the facility is remote, surrounded by water, and designed to house up to 5,000 undocumented immigrants. The trip marks a return to one of Trump’s defining political messages—strict immigration control—and reflects his ongoing focus on border enforcement ahead of a potential re-election bid.
The visit comes shortly after news that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is in line to receive significant funding increases under Trump’s proposed tax and spending package. The Florida center, estimated to cost around $450 million annually, appears to be a central piece of that plan.
Speaking to NBC News, White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor outlined the significance of the trip.
“In the president’s view, this is a symbol of his core immigration policy,” she said. “It’s happening in his home state, and it gives him a chance to frame immigration as a top priority again.”
Local officials have raised concerns about the facility’s design. The site, built on a defunct airstrip deep in the wetlands, is effectively surrounded by swamp. Its nickname comes from the assumption that anyone attempting to flee would be met not just by water, but by alligators.
Critics argue the setup is intentionally harsh. Supporters frame it as a deterrent and a security feature.
Trump’s visit also coincides with a separate idea he has floated: reopening the actual Alcatraz prison in California as a federal facility. That proposal has received pushback due to high projected costs and logistical barriers, but it reinforces a theme he has leaned on—tough enforcement and symbolic moves.
While the Florida facility isn’t operational yet, the timing of Trump’s appearance signals a kind of victory lap. He’s expected to speak at the site and meet with federal and state officials involved in its development.
