Trump Commends Coast Guard and Texas Leaders in Kerrville Flood Response

What's the story

At a roundtable in Kerrville, Texas, President Trump’s first words were for the people still lost in the state’s devastating floods. (Also read: Trump Visits Flood-Hit Texas as White House Faces Diplomatic Workforce Cuts)

Only after acknowledging the grim search still underway did he turn to praise the Coast Guard and state officials on the front lines of the disaster response.

“The search for the missing is continuing,” Trump said. “Today I especially want to thank all of these incredible people from the Coast Guard. Please pass along my regards to the ones we mentioned.”

He added that the response effort was something all Americans should take note of.

“Every American should be inspired by what’s taken place during this short period of time,” he said.

Personal Praise for Governor Abbott

He gave special credit to Texas Governor Greg Abbott for stepping up in the crisis.

“He’s an amazing guy,” Trump said. “We’ve become very, very close politically and personally. I guess Texas brought us together.”

Turning to the Governor’s wife, Cecilia Abbott, Trump added, “She’s been our friend for a long time. The job you do is really incredible in so many different ways, including with the border.”

Notable Officials in Attendance

The President noted the presence of several high-profile figures, both from his administration and Texas politics. Among those mentioned were Secretaries Christine Noem, Brooke Rollins, and Scott Turner, along with administrator Kelly Loeffler.

“Some of them hopped on the plane with me,” Trump said, referencing their quick arrival for the event.

He also recognized Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, both of whom were in attendance, and briefly acknowledged Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.

“I see you sitting there. I don’t know if they even have your name down,” Trump said with a smile, “but when I’m here, your name is down.”

Response Still Underway

As recovery work continues across the flood-ravaged region, the Kerrville meeting was a chance to take stock. It’s one of several stops planned to thank the people doing the heavy lifting and to look at what’s next for these communities.

There were no big policy reveals. Instead, the gathering was all about showing appreciation and making sure local and federal teams know they’re still in this together.
