A SpaceX Starship went up in flames during a late-night test at Starbase, Texas, around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Ship 36 was in testing for what would’ve been its tenth flight.
SpaceX confirmed the incident in a post on X. The company called it a “major anomaly.”
“No injuries were reported. Safety zones held, and all staff are accounted for,” SpaceX said.
Footage of the explosion spread quickly.
Several livestreams captured the moment. A stream shared by Cameron County Constable Precinct 1 showed the sudden blast.
A voice in the background can be heard shouting, “Whoa! Whoa! No… Oh, my God.”
The test was expected to be a static fire, part of preflight checks.
SpaceX says it is now working with local officials to secure the site. The company asked residents to stay away from the area while teams “safe” the launch pad.
“No hazards to nearby communities have been identified,” they added.
Elon Musk responded briefly on X the next morning. “Just a scratch,” he wrote.
SpaceX built Starship as its next-generation launcher, aiming for the Moon and beyond.
This test was part of a series of ground trials ahead of its next flight attempt.
Despite the blast, SpaceX has had a track record of moving quickly after such events. Still, no timeline was shared for the next test.
