After a long and public fight, Gina Carano and Disney have put their lawsuit to bed. For those who need a refresher, this whole firestorm kicked off back in 2021 when Carano, who played Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, was let go from the show.
Anyway, she puts up this post online comparing what it’s like to be a conservative in America today to being Jewish during the Holocaust. And people just went nuts. The backlash was huge, and Disney didn’t waste any time—they just fired her from the show, period.
Some fans and public figures reacted negatively to her firing. It then turned into a lawsuit a few years later.
Carano filed suit for wrongful termination and sexual discrimination. She claimed two male co-stars had posted similar content online but weren’t punished. Her legal team asked for $75,000 in damages and a chance for her to return to the series.
The case caught the attention of Elon Musk, who ended up funding her lawsuit. Carano said she had never met him, calling it a “Good Samaritan deed.”
This week, the actress announced the case had been resolved.
In a post on X, she wrote that she hoped the outcome would bring “some healing to the force,” calling it “the best for all parties involved.” She declared herself ready to finally move on, ending her message with a note of pure triumph: “Yes, I’m smiling.”
Details of the settlement haven’t been made public.
In its own statement, Lucasfilm struck a conciliatory tone. The company said it looked forward to “identifying opportunities to work together.”
It also spoke highly of her character, and work ethic, and made her feel good, obviously. The statement continued: “She was always respected by her directors, co-stars and staff. “She spent time honing her craft and was kind + respectful to her peers.”
Carano, a former MMA fighter, has been a controversial presence on the internet. Over the pandemic, she had spoken against mask mandates and, post 2020 U.S. presidential election, pushed false claims of voter fraud.
Regardless of the accusations, some fans had a painful gap left after she left The Mandalorian.
And now, having finally settled that lawsuit, it looks like Carano is ready to move on. Uncertainty looms regarding the next steps. But for now, the battle in the courts is done.
