India leveled the Test series at Edgbaston, and they have their bowlers to thank for it. The real hero was Akash Deep. (Also Read: Shubman Gill Criticizes Flat Pitches and Dukes Ball in England Test Series)
Tasked with replacing Jasprit Bumrah, he did more than just step up—he had the game of his life, taking his first ten-wicket haul. His 6 for 99 on the final day broke England’s back and won the match for his team.
“They were magnificent,” Shubman Gill said after the match. “Getting through the top order was key. Akash bowled with so much heart. He hit the right areas and lengths, got the ball to move both ways. That’s hard to do on pitches like this.”
Akash wasn’t alone. Mohammed Siraj’s six wickets in England’s first innings and Prasidh Krishna’s steady support gave India the edge. Gill was quick to recognize all three. “Even Prasidh didn’t get as many wickets, but he bowled really well,” he added.
Bumrah to Return for Lord’s Test
Gill confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading pacer, will return for the third Test at Lord’s on July 10.
“Definitely,” he said when asked about Bumrah’s comeback. “Probably the most iconic cricket stadium in the world. Every kid dreams of playing there. And leading the team as captain—it’s a huge honour.”
Bumrah was rested for the Edgbaston Test but is expected to feature in two of the remaining three matches in the series.
Depth in India’s Pace Reserves
India’s bowling strength was another point of focus. Gill was impressed by the depth available to the team.
“When your fast bowlers take 16-17 wickets, captaincy becomes easy,” he said. “Even with Bumrah not playing, the talent we have in this squad is incredible. From this group of 16-17 players, any attack can take 20 wickets anywhere.”
Gill’s Own Form Draws Attention
Gill’s personal performance was equally commanding. He scored 269 and 161 in the two innings, becoming only the second batter to record two 150-plus scores in the same Test.
Only Graham Gooch has scored more in a single Test — 456 in 1990. This player sits second with 430.
“I’d say I’m feeling comfortable,” Gill said about his batting. “If my contribution helps us win the series, that would be a great achievement.”
India now heads to Lord’s with the series tied and momentum on their side. With Bumrah back and Gill in form, expectations are high.
