New Zealand allrounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, as well as the upcoming Test series, after sustaining a groin injury during the Major League Cricket final on July 13.
Phillips, who had been representing Washington Freedom in the U.S.-based tournament, was assessed upon arrival in Zimbabwe. Medical staff confirmed that he would need several weeks to recover, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement.
Tim Robinson, initially brought in as cover for players involved in the MLC knockouts, will remain with the squad through the remainder of the T20I tri-series. A replacement for Phillips in the Test squad will be named later.
“It’s obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn’s calibre,” said New Zealand head coach Rob Walter. “Much like Finn [Allen], we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series.”

Walter added that Phillips was eager to contribute and the team is confident he’ll work his way back soon.
Phillips will return home along with Jimmy Neesham and Mitch Hay, who were also part of the initial tri-series cover group.
His injury adds to a growing list of sidelined players. Ben Sears is recovering from a side strain, and Finn Allen is out with a foot issue.
There is some relief for New Zealand’s Test squad, though. Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who had been working through a knee injury, is set to rejoin the team. He proved match-fit during his stint with Central Districts in the Global Super League in Guyana.
New Zealand began the tri-series with a 21-run victory over South Africa in Harare. They are also scheduled to play Zimbabwe again as part of the group stage.
With Phillips out and other injuries testing squad depth, New Zealand’s bench will play a critical role in the upcoming matches.
