Bangladesh Shifts Focus to White-Ball Series After Test Defeat in Sri Lanka

What's the story

With the Test series over, it’s all about white-ball cricket for Bangladesh now. They’ve got a busy couple of weeks ahead in Sri Lanka, starting with a three-game ODI series on July 2.

The first two matches will be in Colombo, with the third in Pallekele. After that, they’ll play a three-game T20 series. That one kicks off July 10 in Pallekele, makes a stop in Dambulla, and finishes up the whole tour in Colombo on July 16.

Eight members of the ODI squad left for Sri Lanka on Friday. On Saturday, fast bowler Taskin Ahmed and batter Naim Sheikh joined them.

Taskin, returning from an extended injury break, spoke with optimism ahead of his departure.

“We have the T20 World Cup, Asia Cup, and the 2027 World Cup ahead,” he said. “Each series is important. I believe we can win both the ODI and T20 series. Win or lose, we’ll give it everything.”

A frustrating ankle injury has kept the right-arm pacer on the sidelines for nearly three months, forcing him to watch from home as his team played a home series against Zimbabwe and toured both Pakistan and the UAE.

“It feels good to be back,” he said. “Thanks to God I’m fit again. Now I just want to contribute to our wins.”

After digging deep to hold off Sri Lanka in Galle, Bangladesh couldn’t stop the slide in Colombo—and the series was lost. A tough way to wrap up the Tests.

Time to let it go. The focus is now on the white-ball games, and with the shift in format, the team might just find the lift they need.

Taskin’s return adds experience to the bowling attack as Bangladesh looks to reset momentum ahead of major international tournaments later this year.

Selectors are expected to keep a close eye on individual form during the tour, especially as the squad builds toward global events. With multiple key competitions on the horizon, performances in Sri Lanka may shape future team combinations.

For now, the focus remains on July 2, when Bangladesh steps back onto the field in Colombo, hoping for a fresh start in colored kits.
