What's the story

Three men accused in the murder of a scrap metal trader in Old Dhaka have confessed to their involvement in the killing. (Also read: Sohag’s Murder in Old Dhaka Linked to Business Dispute, Says DMP)

The victim, Lal Chand, also known as Md Sohag, was attacked and killed in broad daylight near Gate 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital on 9 July.

All three suspects have confessed. A court source confirmed Wednesday that Titon Gazi, Alamgir, and Monir each gave separate, sworn statements to magistrates in Dhaka. The confessions were recorded under Section 164, formally entering their admissions into the court record.

Court Sends Accused to Jail

After the statements were recorded, the court ordered the three men to be sent to jail. The application to record their confessions was filed by Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station and the investigating officer in the case.

Prior to the court proceedings, all three were placed on police remand. Titon had been remanded for five days on 12 July. Alamgir and Monir were each remanded for four days starting on 13 July.

Brutal Killing Caught on Video

Imagine seeing a video of your own brother’s murder go viral. That was the nightmare facing Monjuara Begum after Sohag was bludgeoned to death with a concrete block in Old Dhaka. The attack, right outside a hospital, horrified the public.

Fueled by grief, his sister went to the police and formally accused a crowd she says numbered close to 40, providing the names of 19 of them.

Police have also filed a separate case under the Arms Act in relation to the same incident.

Nine Arrested So Far

Investigators have arrested nine suspects in connection with the killing.

Sohag, the son of Yusuf Ali Howlader, was a long-time resident of Purbo Namabari village in Keraniganj Model Thana. He operated his scrap business on Rajani Ghosh Lane, near Mitford Hospital.

The investigation remains ongoing.
