Court Orders Speedy Trial Case Against Nurul Haque Nur Over Barishal Attack

What's the story

A Barishal court on Thursday directed police to register a case against Nurul Haque Nur, former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), and more than 100 leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad under the Speedy Trial Act.

The order was issued following allegations of vandalism and assault at the Jatiya Party’s Barishal district office.

According to Abdul Jalil, general secretary of Jatiya Party’s Barishal unit and the complainant’s legal representative, the court instructed the officer-in-charge of Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station to officially record the case.

Nurul Haque Nur, currently the central president of Gono Adhikar Parishad, has been named as the lead accused. Others include the party’s general secretary Rashed Khan, Barishal district president HM Shamim Reza, district general secretary HM Hasan, and metropolitan general secretary Farhad Hossain.

The case also names 25 other individuals and lists 70 to 80 unidentified persons.

The complaint stems from an incident on May 31, when leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad allegedly attacked the Jatiya Party’s office on Fakirbari Road in Barishal.

Jalil stated that police initially refused to file a case when the victims approached the local station. The matter was later brought before the court.

In response, the court ordered that the complaint be forwarded to police for official filing. Duty officer SI Dolly received the court’s instructions and acknowledged the directive.

The case will likely move forward under the Speedy Trial Act, a law often applied to offenses that disrupt public order.

No statement from Nur or Gono Adhikar Parishad leadership was immediately available.
