NCP to Announce Manifesto of New Bangladesh at Dhaka Rally

What's the story

The National Citizens Party (NCP) will unveil its “Manifesto of New Bangladesh” on Sunday during a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar, as the country waits for the long-anticipated July Declaration.

The announcement came through a verified Facebook post on Saturday morning, confirming that the party will hold its rally at 3 p.m. Party leaders say the event will demand the government issue the July Declaration and offer an alternative if no official version is released by then.

NCP Convener Nahid Islam, who will present the outline for building a “new Bangladesh,” has framed the rally as part of a one-point program aimed at the fall of fascism. He invited citizens from across the country to attend, calling it a “historic juncture” for the movement.

Earlier in the week, Nahid told supporters in Narsingdi that if the government issued the July Declaration before the rally, the NCP would deliver its response. If not, they would release their own version to reflect the aspirations of the July mass uprising.

Preparations for the event appear complete, with leaders and activists mobilizing support nationwide. Originally focused on Dhaka residents, the rally is now drawing participants from other regions to “uphold the spirit of the July March,” according to party organizers.

Meanwhile, the interim government has indicated that the July Declaration will be finalized soon. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said in a Facebook post that the declaration is ready and will be presented to the nation at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5.

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam, speaking after Saturday’s July Revival Rally at the Shaheed Minar, described the document as “the embodiment of the people’s aspirations during the July mass uprising.” He said the Ministry of Information is working with its 15 agencies to preserve records and produce documentaries on the uprising.

Dhaka is bracing for a hectic Sunday, with the city set to become a stage for three major gatherings. The Shahbagh area will be the epicenter, where the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal has a rally planned for most of the day, with the NCP rally joining them in the afternoon. At the same time, a day-long cultural festival, “July Jagaran,” will be going on over at Suhrawardy Udyan.

With so many people expected, police are warning that traffic around Shahbagh and the university will be a complete mess. They’re telling any students who have HSC or BCS exams to give themselves plenty of extra time to get there.

But beyond the traffic, all eyes are on the political implications. Activists, party members, and regular citizens are all waiting for a signal, some clue as to what the next step for the movement will be.
