National Citizen Party Expels Mahin Sarkar Over Breach of Party Discipline

What's the story

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has expelled its Joint Member Secretary, Mahin Sarkar, citing violation of party discipline.

The decision came under the directive of NCP Convener Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain. In a press release issued Monday, the party confirmed that the expulsion takes immediate effect and will remain valid until further notice.

Party insiders said Sarkar announced his candidacy for the position of general secretary in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election. He chose to run under the panel led by Jamaluddin Muhammad Khalid, convener of the Swadhin Bangladesh Chhatra Sangsad, a rival student platform.

NCP leaders described the move as a clear breach of organizational discipline. “The decision had to be made quickly. His candidacy under another panel directly contradicted party directives,” an official familiar with the matter said.

For NCP, this incident highlights the tension between its broader political stance and student politics on campus. Ducsu elections, while student-based, often carry weight beyond the university, with candidates linked to national parties or factions.

The removal raises uncertainty regarding whether additional members intend to emulate Sarkar’s trajectory or whether the leadership will impose stricter discipline in anticipation of the impending student elections.

Presently, the organisation has communicated unequivocally that behaviour interpreted as disloyal will incur severe repercussions.
