Mahmudul Hasan Mohin Confesses to Mitford Scrap Trader Murder

What's the story

Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the prime accused in the killing of scrap trader Md Sohag near Mitford Hospital in Dhaka, has confessed to the crime in a Dhaka court.

Police presented Mohin before Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mahbubur Rahman on Sunday after two rounds of remand totaling ten days. The investigating officer, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman, submitted a petition to record the statement once Mohin expressed willingness to confess.

The court accepted the statement and ordered that Mohin be sent to jail.

The incident took place on the evening of July 9 on Rajoni Ghosh Lane, near Gate 3 of Mitford Hospital. A group reportedly attacked Sohag, also known as Lal Chand, using stones and sharp weapons. He died at the scene.

His sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a murder case the next day, naming 19 individuals and accusing 15 to 20 others whose identities remain unknown. A second case under the Arms Act was also registered by police in connection with the incident.

Police had earlier obtained two five-day remands for interrogation, the first on July 10 and the second on July 15.

Murder in broad daylight. That’s what happened to Sohag, a long-time scrap dealer from the Mitford area.

His business was on Rajoni Ghosh Lane, but his life ended right outside a packed hospital, a brazen attack that drew immediate attention.

While investigators have now recorded a full confession from one suspect, they say the hunt is still on for everyone else named in the case file.
