In Mirpur, police have detained six in connection with a robbery that saw a businessman lose Tk 2.2 million.
The robbery happened on May 17 near the Fire Service Station in Mirpur 10.
Zahidur Rahman had a bag of cash with him when three men on a motorcycle intercepted and attacked him, police said. They shot at him and took the money.
During the robbery, Rahman was also slashed with a sharp weapon. Passersby reportedly took photos but did not intervene.
Detectives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) later traced the suspects through a microbus used in the attack. The vehicle’s driver helped lead police to the gang.
Links formed inside jail
DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the group was formed behind bars.
“Several members met during prison terms,” he said. “They later teamed up for crimes outside.”
Raids were conducted across Dhaka, Barisal, Patuakhali, Mymensingh, and Jashore, he confirmed.
They arrested the group’s main planner, Jalil Molla, along with five others — Mostafiz, Palash, Dipu, and Sohag among them.
Investigators say some members were previously involved in other high-profile robberies, including one in Kamrangirchar.
One officer noted a possible link to a 5.2 million taka robbery in Dhanmondi, but said not all the suspects arrested were tied to both cases.
The group is also suspected of working with counterfeit currency dealers.
Piracy arrest in Noakhali
In a separate case, police also confirmed the arrest of Tipu Sultan in Noakhali.
He is accused of pirating the film Tandob, starring actor Shakib Khan.
“This is a serious crime,” said DC Talebur Rahman. “We’re treating it with full attention.”
Police say more operations are planned as part of ongoing efforts to break organized crime networks operating across the country.
