Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Sunday said trials tied to last year’s July uprising will be completed before the interim government’s tenure ends. (Also read: First Memorial for July 2024 Uprising Victims Inaugurated in Narayanganj)

Speaking at the inauguration of the “July Shaheed Smritistambha” in Narayanganj, the first national memorial dedicated to those killed during the 36-day movement, Nazrul said legal proceedings were progressing steadily.

Tribunal and Criminal Proceedings Underway

“The trials at the International Crimes Tribunal are progressing swiftly, and there will be no negligence,” he told attendees.

In addition to tribunal work, Nazrul said several cases related to the uprising were under investigation in local criminal courts across the country.

He shared that Narayanganj’s superintendent of police informed him charge sheets in a number of local cases could be submitted before 5 August, marking the first anniversary of the uprising.

If necessary, trials may proceed under the speedy trial act, he added.

Recalling the Protests

The July uprising led to the fall of the Awami League government following sustained demonstrations. The adviser reflected on the significance of the movement.

“A dictatorship that lasted 15 and a half years was dismantled in just 15 days through the united will of the people,” Nazrul said.

Concerns About Present-Day Violence

Nazrul also spoke out about a rise in extortion and violence seen in communities nationwide.

He urged people to remain unified and resist criminal activity with the backing of the administration.

Advisers, Officials Attend Memorial Event

The ceremony in Narayanganj was attended by several advisers to the interim government, including Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Education Adviser CR Abrar.

Also there were Public Administration Secretary Dr Md Mokhlesur Rahman and Housing Secretary Md Nazrul Islam. They joined officials and family members in laying flowers at the new memorial.

People exchanged quiet words and gentle hugs, offering small moments of comfort to show the families they weren’t alone.
