Former Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has been detained by Dhaka police following bribery allegations tied to election misconduct.
Acting DB chief Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrest during a media briefing Sunday night.
Police said a case was filed on June 21 at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Huda was named as a primary accused. The complaint claims he illegally assumed electoral authority, failed to declare campaign spending, and bribed others to influence the outcome of an election.
On the evening of June 22, local residents in Uttara’s Sector 5 reportedly surrounded Huda at his residence on Road 1A, House 29. Police said residents took him into “protective custody” before informing Uttara West Police Station. Officers arrived shortly after and transferred him to DB custody.
“He’s currently with the DB,” Rahman said. “Legal procedures are ongoing.”
Footage widely shared online shows Huda being heckled and pelted with shoes.
Asked about his condition, Rahman said Huda was medically evaluated shortly after his arrival at the DB office. “His vitals are normal,” he added. “He’s physically fine.”
At the time of reporting, no additional cases have been confirmed against him.
Huda was also named in another case this week, but police gave no update.
He said Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police will lead the next phase of the investigation. The case gained attention as elections approach.
