Sharif, a recently expelled Dhaka University unit leader of Chhatra Dal, has publicly responded to the decision, claiming that he was removed on grounds of organizational indiscipline, though he later learned that alleged links with Islami Chhatra Shibir may have played a role.
Speaking in a recorded statement, Sharif said the basis for his expulsion initially cited disciplinary violations, but he believes the real reason was his brief association with a music program in 2017 that was, unknown to him at the time, affiliated with Shibir.
“I was just learning music. I had no understanding of politics or ideology back then,” Sharif said. “Now they say I was involved with Shibir, but I never had any organizational relationship with them.”
He insisted that since joining Chhatra Dal in 2018, he has been consistently active in its political programs and maintained organizational discipline.
“There’s nothing else they can accuse me of. I’ve been with Chhatra Dal for seven years. I never did anything that would warrant expulsion,” he added.
Sharif suggested his expulsion was tied to the July mass uprising, where Chhatra Dal members were said to have played a major role in protests and street demonstrations.
He recalled participating in several protests across Dhaka from mid-July, including being arrested briefly in Uttara on July 3. He later joined demonstrations that reportedly broke curfews and involved coordinated action at Dhaka University halls.
“I left my home on the fifth with a letter in my pocket and a copy of my ID, prepared for either victory or death,” he said, referencing the mood among protesters during that period.
Sharif also described a deadly confrontation on August 5 in Chankharpul, where he said five activists were killed. He narrowly escaped, according to his account, while another demonstrator standing in front of him died from police fire.
The expulsion, he suggested, came not only without warning but during a time when he and others were engaged in intense street-level activism.
“I don’t know why this decision came now. Maybe they know better. But if this is true, worse days might be coming,” Sharif said.
No official response from Chhatra Dal leadership has been issued publicly regarding the specifics of his expulsion or the allegations.
