Army Says It Awaits EC Instruction on Election Deployment

What's the story

The Bangladesh Army hasn’t gotten the official call yet for the national election, but they’re ready to go. On Tuesday, Colonel Shafiqul Islam made it clear at a press briefing: if the government asks, the army will be there to make sure the election is free and fair.

“There has been no official directive yet,” he told reporters. “But if the Election Commission gives us instructions, the Army will be prepared.”

His comments come amid growing public attention on the role of security forces ahead of the next general election.

Allegations of Army Links to Disappearances Addressed

The briefing also touched on a sensitive topic: enforced disappearances and rumors involving army personnel.

Colonel Shafiqul acknowledged that some members of the army had been deputed to various units. But he stressed that even while on deputation, these personnel remained under army oversight.

Asked about specific allegations that army members were involved in disappearances, he responded cautiously.

“If any claims are proven through proper investigation, the Army will take appropriate action,” he said.

He also addressed families of the missing. “If anyone feels unsafe and seeks our assistance, the Army will extend support,” he added.

Other Operations Briefly Highlighted

The press conference included updates on recent army activity.

Colonel Shafiqul said army units had supported law enforcement during the recent Rath Yatra celebrations.

He also noted that nearly 400 members of youth gangs had been brought under legal action in operations aimed at reducing street crime.

No further comments were made on future operations or internal security strategy.

The Election Commission has not yet commented on the Army’s potential role, and no timeline has been shared regarding deployment decisions.
