NCP Leaders Visit Injured Gono Odhikar Parishad Chief Nurul Haque Nur at Dhaka Hospital

What's the story

Leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) visited Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday night, two days after he was injured in clashes in the capital.

NCP Convenor Nahid Islam and Chief Coordinator for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, went straight to the hospital after returning from China. The pair met Nur at his bedside, prayed for his recovery, and called for punishment of those behind the assault.

“We demand justice and accountability,” one of the leaders said after the visit.

Several other party members, including Senior Joint Convenor Ariful Islam Adeeb, also joined them. Their presence underscored the continuing political attention around Nur’s condition.

Nur, a former vice president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and now head of Gono Odhikar Parishad, was injured on Friday when police and army personnel used batons during clashes in the Kakrail area of Dhaka. The circumstances of the confrontation remain a point of contention, with different sides offering varying accounts.

For many in Bangladesh, Nur remains a recognizable figure from his student leadership days. His political activities have often drawn both support and controversy. The hospital visit by NCP leaders reflects not only concern for his health but also the wider tensions surrounding street politics in Dhaka.

The extent of Nur’s injuries has not been fully detailed, though those close to him say he is in stable condition. Whether this incident will escalate into broader political conflict is uncertain, but it raises questions about the limits of force in managing protests and the risks faced by opposition leaders.
