Mirza Fakhrul calls Tarique Rahman “future prime minister” at Dhaka doctors’ event

What's the story

BNP’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has hailed acting chairman Tarique Rahman as the future prime minister of Bangladesh.

He made the emphatic statement on Saturday while addressing the national conference of the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh in Dhaka. Rahman was the chief guest at the event.

Fakhrul framed his comments in the context of broader rights, saying political change should go beyond restoring democracy or voting rights. “All rights, including food and healthcare, must be ensured,” he told the gathering.

He praised Bangladeshi doctors as among the best in the subcontinent but said systemic problems, not professional competence, were holding the health sector back. “The culture of mutual animosity has destroyed us,” he said. He also called for an end to what he described as slogan-based politics.

The BNP leader said the party’s 31-point plan, introduced by Rahman, could bring significant change to healthcare and other sectors. “Your responsibility is immense,” he told the DAB members. “On one hand, you have to serve the people, and on the other, you must build the country’s future. You must assist political figures in formulating health policies.”

He returned to the theme of unity, urging political actors to break free from cycles of hatred, which he said have been destructive for the country.

Other speakers highlighted the role of doctors in political movements and policy development, although the focus of the event remained firmly on healthcare reform and the BNP’s political vision.
