A Narayanganj court has placed former city mayor Selina Hayat Ivy on a two-day police remand in connection with a murder case linked to a deadly protest in 2024.
The remand order came on Monday following a request from investigators, according to officials at the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Moinuddin Kadir.
The Case Behind the Remand
Tuhin, a 36-year-old rickshaw puller, was killed during a protest on July 20 last year in Shimrail, Siddhirganj — a case now at the heart of ongoing legal proceedings.
The demonstration turned deadly when Tuhin was shot and killed. His death was one of several eruptions of violence between police and protesters that day.
Nearly two months later, on September 13, the victim’s wife, Aleya Akter Mim, filed a case at Siddhirganj Police Station. The complaint named 99 people as accused. Among them was Selina Hayat Ivy.
Ivy’s Arrest and Earlier Remand
Police arrested Ivy from her Narayanganj home on May 9. In the weeks that followed, she was charged in multiple cases stemming from the July 2024 protests, including more than one involving murder.
On May 25, she was previously placed on remand in a separate case. That one related to the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam, who also died during the same unrest in Siddhirganj.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
With the fresh remand granted this week, Ivy now faces questioning in both cases. Authorities haven’t said exactly what role they think she played in either killing.
Ivy has not commented since her arrest. Her legal team could not be reached for comment.
Questions Still Hang Over the Protests
The July 2024 protests drew national attention for their intensity and the fatalities that followed. What began as a workers’ demonstration escalated quickly. Details remain unclear, and public speculation continues over who ordered what and why.
In Tuhin’s case, witnesses have shared conflicting accounts. Some say he was a bystander. Others claim he was involved in the protest. The origin of the gunfire that killed him is still uncertain.
Why was Ivy named? What evidence supports her inclusion in the list of 99 accused? For now, authorities haven’t made that part of the investigation public.
There’s no timeline yet for charges or another court date. But for Ivy—once a major political force in Narayanganj—the case has become a defining legal moment.
