Elon Musk Launches ‘America Party’ in Bid to Disrupt Two-Party System

What's the story

Billionaire Elon Musk announced the creation of a new political group, the “America Party,” on Saturday through a post on X, the social media platform he owns.

In the announcement, Musk described the United States as functioning under a one-party system when it comes to fiscal responsibility. He positioned the new party as an alternative aimed at restoring freedom and countering what he described as government waste and graft.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Political Split with Trump

The move comes just weeks after Musk parted ways with former President Donald Trump. Musk had previously supported Trump and helped bankroll his 2024 campaign, reportedly contributing a significant share of the $288 million spent by pro-Trump groups last year.

Trump later appointed Musk to head the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which was tasked with reducing federal spending.

That relationship began to fray in June after Musk opposed Trump’s signature budget bill, referred to as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The legislation limited tax credits for electric vehicles, affecting Tesla directly.

Musk criticized the bill for expanding the national deficit and lobbied against it. His public opposition marked the end of his role in DOGE and shifted the tone of his relationship with Trump.

Unclear Platform but Early Signals

While the America Party’s detailed platform has not been released, Musk offered glimpses of its priorities. In reposting another user on X, he signaled support for issues like debt reduction, AI-driven defense modernization, deregulation, and free speech.

The post also pointed to “centrist policies,” though no specifics were outlined.

There’s talk that Musk could back candidates in Congress or the Senate who align with his views. Given the GOP’s narrow control of both chambers, even limited backing could prove significant.

Business Ramifications Remain Uncertain

The broader impact of Musk’s political realignment on his business interests is still unclear.

Tesla has been facing growing pressure from Chinese automakers like BYD and internal financial concerns. Some analysts have connected Tesla’s cost-cutting efforts and executive turnover to Musk’s recent decision to leave DOGE.

With his move into party politics, the attention around Musk may grow louder in both business and political circles.

Whether the America Party gains traction among voters or remains more symbolic is yet to be seen. For now, it marks another chapter in Musk’s expanding presence in public life.
