AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava Arrested for Alleged Assault at Gujarat Meeting

What's the story

A political event in Gujarat designed to discuss local development turned violent on Saturday, leading to the arrest of an AAP lawmaker, Chaitar Vasava.

He is accused of attacking the local BJP president, Sanjay Vasava, during the meeting. The incident completely derailed what was supposed to be a constructive government program.

FIR Details Series of Allegations

According to the FIR filed at Dediapada police station, the MLA allegedly threw a mobile phone at Sanjay Vasava, leading to head injuries. The report also claims he threatened the complainant with glass shards, verbally abused a woman panchayat president, disrupted public peace, and damaged property by hurling a glass object.

The confrontation reportedly followed a disagreement over the exclusion of one of Chaitar Vasava’s nominees from a committee, which escalated into a heated dispute with BJP members.

Police Action and Legal Developments

In response, Section 144 was imposed in Dediapada, restricting gatherings to avoid further unrest.

Vasava faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), Section 115(2) (causing hurt), and Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation).

Police requested a five-day remand from a magistrate court in Rajpipla on Sunday, but the court denied the request. The court also rejected Vasava’s bail plea, sending him to judicial custody. He is expected to move the sessions court for bail on Monday.

AAP Reacts, Labels Arrest Political

AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal responded to the arrest on X, calling it politically motivated.

“BJP is furious after losing the Visavadar by-election. If they think AAP will be scared by such arrests, they are mistaken,” he posted.

Kejriwal didn’t hold back—saying people in Gujarat are tired of the BJP’s “misrule and hooliganism” and plan to speak out through their votes.

The BJP has not issued a formal response to the allegations or Kejriwal’s remarks.

Previous Arrest Adds Context

This isn’t Vasava’s first brush with the law. In December 2023, he was arrested after allegedly threatening forest officials and opening fire in a tribal land dispute in Narmada.

That case, too, drew attention, given Vasava’s vocal stance on tribal issues and land use rights.
