Police on Tuesday arrested Naimur Rahman Durjoy, a former Member of Parliament and captain of Bangladesh’s national cricket team, from a residential area in Lalmatia, Dhaka. The arrest comes months after Durjoy reportedly went into hiding following political unrest and a series of criminal cases filed against him and other party leaders.
Durjoy, a former Awami League MP for Manikganj-1, is being taken to Manikganj by law enforcement. Officials say more legal action is expected.
Several sources confirmed Durjoy had been out of public view since the events of August 5, when a wave of political demonstrations led to clashes and legal actions. According to police officials, he may be shown arrested in connection with multiple local cases filed around that period. Those include allegations of political violence, corruption, and financial misconduct.
Investigators also pointed to a series of cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission. Some involve Durjoy’s family members, including his wife, and relate to asset mismanagement and suspected money laundering. A travel ban was issued against the family earlier this year.
Authorities say Durjoy’s arrest is part of a broader effort to pursue legal action against individuals tied to alleged abuses of power during the previous government’s tenure. Several other Awami League leaders have been detained in recent months under similar circumstances.
Durjoy’s arrival in Manikganj was unconfirmed as of Tuesday evening. He was taken into custody near the Dhanmondi-Lalmatia border and was reportedly still en route.
Durjoy’s parliamentary career began in 2001 after retiring from professional cricket. During his terms, he held influence both locally and within party structures. But over time, allegations surfaced ranging from irregular tender processes to questionable land dealings and unaccounted wealth.
It’s unclear which specific cases the police will cite in his formal arrest record. A clearer picture is expected by Wednesday, once authorities decide which files will be used to justify his detention.
Though not entirely unexpected, the arrest is a notable development. As scrutiny on past political controversies grows, many are watching to see if this signals a wider shift.
For now, Durjoy is still in custody. Further details are likely as legal steps move forward.
