Finance Adviser Urges NBR Officers to End Protest, Promises Quick Resolution

What's the story

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has called on officers of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to withdraw their protest, citing national interest.

Speaking after a meeting with representatives from tax, customs, and excise cadres on Thursday at the Ministry of Finance, he assured that the current crisis would be resolved soon.

Notably, members of the NBR Reform Unity Council, the group leading the protest, did not attend the meeting.

The protesters remain firm in their demand for the removal of NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan. They have warned of a complete shutdown beginning Saturday if their demand is not met by Friday.

At a recent press conference, they accused law enforcement agencies of intimidation and appealed for direct intervention from the Chief Adviser.

NBR Chairman Khan didn’t mince words, warning the timing of the unrest couldn’t be worse. He stressed that with the fiscal year’s deadline looming, the protests are choking off vital revenue streams.

Now, all eyes are on the coming days; if negotiations collapse, there’s a real fear these disruptions could spiral.
