UK-raised striker Zayn Hakeem has declared his desire to represent Bangladesh. Officials say his passport process is underway.
The BFF says it has received the required documents and hopes to finish the process within a month.
“We have spoken to him. He wants to play for Bangladesh,” said the BFF vice president. “We’ve collected all required documents and started working on them. If the coach finds him suitable, he could fill a position we’ve struggled with for years.”
For a long time, Bangladesh has lacked a reliable number nine. Most recent additions to the team have been midfielders or wingers. Hakeem, in contrast, plays as a central striker — something the squad has been missing.
Past international appearance adds complexity
Hakeem has previously played in an official match for Antigua and Barbuda. Because of that, his switch to Bangladesh must go through FIFA’s formal process.
These rules are strict. A player who has represented one country in a competitive match cannot easily switch to another. In some cases, decisions go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The BFF believes there is still a path forward. “If the player agrees and we handle the paperwork properly, the final decision may favor us,” the official added.
Strong personal ties and playing background
Hakeem and Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury have been close since childhood and remain good friends. Some hope that connection could open doors for more dual-eligible players in the future.
Last season, Hakeem played in England’s eighth-tier football league. He recently joined a club competing in the seventh tier. While not at a professional top level, he is seen as a natural fit for Bangladesh’s striking needs.
FIFA decision remains the final hurdle
No date has been set for Hakeem’s possible debut. His eligibility depends on how FIFA responds to the request. The application is active, but resolution could take time.
Still, there is cautious hope. Bangladesh has been searching for a proper striker for years. If everything goes right, Zayn Hakeem could be the answer.
For now, fans and officials can only wait.
