A student at Rajshahi University has been penalized after bringing his girlfriend into a men’s dorm disguised as a male. The Eid-ul-Adha vacation incident has stirred controversy among students and administrators.
Enrolled in the Population Science and Human Resource Development department (2022–23), Nazmul Islam reportedly brought his girlfriend to Room 153 of Shahid Habibur Rahman Hall on June 3, using the holiday lull to avoid attention.
She reportedly wore a shirt and jeans, paired with a cap, face mask, and an uttoriyo to pass as male.
The two spent the night in the same room. The next morning, June 4, they attempted to leave the hall on a bicycle. Two students standing nearby noticed something unusual. They soon realized the person riding pillion was actually a woman in disguise.
When confronted, the pair sped away.
“He seemed nervous all day,” one student said. “He was asking around for a double-seat bicycle and rushing in and out. We didn’t know what was going on.”
Security guards at the hall said they failed to identify the woman at the time because of her appearance. Some students say they later saw the incident being discussed on social media.
After returning from the Eid break, the university authorities learned of the incident. An initial inquiry led to Nazmul’s dorm seat being revoked. Officials say more actions may follow once a full investigation is completed.
“We’ve already spoken to both of them,” said a senior university official. “They admitted what happened. The dorm seat has been canceled for now. But the matter is serious. We’re forwarding everything to the university’s disciplinary committee.”
A formal committee has been formed to review the incident further. University officials say they will wait for the report before making any final decision on long-term consequences.
Many students living in the hall voiced strong disapproval.
“This is a boys’ dorm. Bringing a girl in like that—especially overnight—is unacceptable,” said one student. “Security should have been more alert too.”
Nazmul could not be reached for comment. But in earlier interviews with local media, he claimed he only brought his friend in for safety reasons. He explained that her room was closed for the night and claimed they were celebrating her birthday with a group.
The administration is still reviewing the case, with no final decision timeline announced.
