NCP Finalizes Constitution, Applies for EC Registration June 22

What's the story

The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has finalized its party constitution, just over three months after launching.

At a general meeting held on Friday, the party officially approved the draft and announced plans to apply for registration with the Election Commission (EC) on June 22.

NCP’s chief organizer for the northern region, Sarjis Alam, shared the update during a press briefing following the meeting.

“We’ve fulfilled all the requirements necessary for registration,” he said. “We’ll be submitting our application before the deadline this Sunday.”

Alam also expressed doubts about the EC’s recent actions.

“Some of the decisions and behavior we’ve seen from the commission raise questions about its neutrality,” he said.

Term Limits and Internal Voting

NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain outlined key features of the new constitution.

Under the new rules, no individual will be allowed to serve more than two terms as party president or general secretary.

“These positions will be filled through direct votes at our National Council,” Hossain said. “Councillors from across the country will participate.”

A 15-member Political Council will also be formed through voting. NCP leaders said the council will include at least three to four women.

Media Criticism Over Female Leadership

Hossain also criticized several media outlets for what he called “offensive” coverage of the party’s female leaders.

“Some outlets published distasteful content targeting our women members,” he said. “We’ll take formal action and file complaints with the Press Council.”

He added that the party would respond institutionally, not just verbally.

Vision for Political Reform

NCP leaders said they aimed to set an example for internal democracy in Bangladeshi politics.

“We believe this constitution can serve as a model,” said a party spokesperson. “Transparent internal elections and term limits are part of that effort.”

The Election Commission has yet to respond to the party’s concerns or confirm its position on the upcoming registration request.
