In Bogura, a 45-year-old rickshaw-puller died after reportedly confronting a neighbor over the harassment of his school-going daughter.
The man, identified as Shakil Ahmed, was attacked twice—allegedly by a group of men led by local political activist Jitu Islam. Shakil was seriously injured in the assault and passed away not long after.
The incident took place in the Shibbati area of Bogura town. According to the family, Jitu, a resident of the same neighborhood and an assistant general secretary of the district’s Swechchhasebak Dal unit, had been pressuring Shakil’s family to agree to a marriage between him and the girl.
The proposal was rejected. Arguments followed. Then, things escalated.
Assault followed repeated disputes
Witnesses and family members said Jitu and several others physically assaulted Shakil near his home. After the first attack, they left him injured. But they returned. This time, they reportedly dragged him from his house and beat him again.
His condition was getting worse fast.
And he was taken to near Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
But even with the doctors doing all they could, he didn’t survive.
Family demands justice
Shakil’s wife spoke through tears.
“My daughter was being harassed regularly. My husband couldn’t stay silent. He stood up for her, and they killed him,” she said. “Those who hit him didn’t just fight him. They beat him like a criminal. I want justice. I want the killers hanged.”
Other relatives echoed the demand. Names like Jitu, Mamitul, and Ashiq came up repeatedly. The family insists these individuals must not be protected or released.
Police response and investigation
Police in Bogura have arrested three suspects yet now, including Jitu Islam.
“We’ve taken Jitu into custody — he’s a central figure in the case,” said a police officer familiar with the investigation. “We’re taking this seriously and expect to pick up more suspects soon.”
Records show Jitu has crossed paths with the law before. He’s also been tied to a number of earlier cases — including charges related to drugs, robbery, and violence.
Case filed with 25 accused
Authorities have registered a case against 25 individuals, including 17 named and 8 unidentified suspects. The charges include murder and assault.
The investigation is ongoing. Some neighbors remain hesitant to speak.
Others quietly express relief that at least the initial arrests have been made. But there’s still worry.
The girl, now left without her father, hasn’t returned to school since.
